Animal control services
In 2017, Furry Friends Refuge expanded its partnership with WestPet animal control to directly take in stray animals from West Des Moines, Clive, and Urbandale and work immediately to reunite pets with their owners.
As soon as an animal is brought to us, we will scan it for a microchip and contact any owner information listed. All animals being held for stray time will be listed on IowaPetAlert.com and our website.
Per municipal code, a lost animal will be held for seven days if the animal has a microchip/tags, or five days if it has neither. During this time, the owner may come to the Furry Friends facility at 1211 Grand Ave., West Des Moines, to reclaim the pet.
At the end of this period, unclaimed animals will be placed for adoption through Furry Friends.
How do I reclaim my pet?
You may call us at (515) 371-5586 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or on weekends from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to make arrangements to reclaim your pet.
You are also welcome to come directly to our main shelter, 1211 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines, from 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays or 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends without calling in advance.
In both cases, you will be required to show proof of rabies vaccination for your animal at the time of reclaim, or you will be required to prearrange a vaccination before your pet is returned. You must also pay the following fees, as applicable:
Impound fee: $50 for the first impound, $75 for the second impound, $100 for the third and subsequent impounds.
Boarding fee: $10 for each day after the initial 24-hour hold.
