Thank you for all who have supported Furry Friends in our struggle to show Urbandale that their choice of supporting commercial breeders and ignoring the need for organizations and people who rescue animals in need. We received significant media coverage of the issue in May. We are still fighting to make the city recognize that this is not simply a zoning matter and that the statements they have made about rescue animals are wrong and support an industry full of abusive and inhumane treatment.

We have filed a lawsuit to appeal the decisions of the board as they are contrary to other decisions made by the board and unfairly discriminate against Furry Friends based on impermissible factors. Additionally, we are meeting with city officials to seek to have the zoning ordinance changed to that it specifically addresses the issue of rescue animals.

We are still in need of your help! Please write to the mayor and let him know that the treatment of dogs in puppy mills and other animals in commercial facilities is important to you and that he should take this matter seriously. Address correspondence to Mayor Bob Andeweg

Furry Friends Refuge needs your help!  The City of Urbandale has made a decision to prevent Furry Friends from operating because it is an organization that serves unwanted animals, instead of a pet store that purchases animals and sells them for profit.  This decision is a sad example of how the plight of dogs in puppymills and abuses of other commercially bred animals is often ignored.  Urbandale has many unwanted or homeless animals that need help.  Without Furry Friends assisting them, many more of these animals will be neglected, abandoned, or euthanized at crowded shelters.  The good news--you can help!  The city will be considering a permit to allow the adoption center to operate at the current location on MAY 7 (new date) at 6:00pm.  The meeting will take place in the city administrative office at 86th and Douglas.

How you can help:
  • Write a letter to the city or call the city administrative office and tell them how important the issue of homeless animals is to you.  Address correspondence to Mayor Bob Andeweg

       phone 515.283.3100
       3600 86th Street
       Urbandale, IA  50322-4057

  • Copies of letters can also be sent to Mr. Paul Dekker at the same address.  Phone calls can also be placed to Mr. Dekker at 515.278.3935
  • If you live in Urbandale, indicate this to the city as your voice is particularly important.
  • Show up to the meeting on May 7th in support of Furry Friends
  • If you have questions or want to know more call at 727-9330 or e-mail at adoptions@furryfriendsrefuge.org
